A private day in Tainan, Taiwan’s first capital, with a local guide: the Confucius Temple and Chihkan Tower, Anping’s Dutch-era fort and banyan Tree House, and a tasting route through the family stalls Tainan is famous for. Reach Tainan by high-speed rail from Taipei, or start from your Tainan hotel.
Tainan was Taiwan’s capital for more than two centuries, and the old city still has the island’s densest web of temples, shrines and historic lanes. It is also where Taiwanese food is taken most seriously.
Your guide grew up here. The day moves between landmarks and the small family stalls that have cooked the same dish for generations: beef soup at breakfast, milkfish, shrimp rolls, almond tofu and shaved ice.
In the afternoon you cross to Anping, where the Dutch built Fort Zeelandia and a merchant warehouse has been swallowed by banyan roots, before returning to the old city as the lanterns come on along Shennong Street.
