Tainan is Taiwan’s food capital, and Time Out named it one of Asia’s top 10 street-food cities in 2025. Start early with fresh beef soup or milkfish congee, graze at lunch on danzai noodles, shrimp rolls and coffin bread, and finish in the old streets at dusk. Many famous stalls open before dawn and sell out by early afternoon.
Why Tainan
Tainan was Taiwan’s first capital, and its cooking reflects four centuries of Dutch, Chinese and Japanese history. Its cooking is known for being slightly sweeter than in the north. In 2025 Time Out listed Tainan among Asia’s 10 best street-food cities, the only Taiwanese city chosen, as the city tourism office notes.
The dishes
- Fresh beef soup (牛肉湯): raw slices of local beef “cooked” by boiling broth poured over them. A breakfast tradition; Wenzhang Beef Soup is one of the stalls listed by Tainan Travel.
- Milkfish (虱目魚): in congee, as fish-ball soup or pan-fried belly. Yongtong is one of the milkfish congee stalls the city lists.
- Salty congee (鹹粥): seafood rice porridge; A-Han is a classic listed by the tourism site.
- Danzai noodles (擔仔麵): a small bowl of noodles with shrimp broth and minced pork, originally sold by fishermen in the off-season.
- Coffin bread (棺材板): thick fried toast filled with a creamy seafood stew.
- Shrimp rolls and almond tofu, for grazing between temples.
How to plan the day
- Arrive early. Many stalls open at dawn and close once sold out.
- Eat small: order one portion to share at each stop and try five or six places.
- Mix food with heritage: the Confucius Temple, Chihkan Tower and Anping are all close to the best stalls.
- Finish on Shennong Street at dusk, among lantern-lit old houses.
Getting there
