Taiwan’s largest lake, ringed by forested hills and Thao culture. Private boat at dawn, black tea estates in Yuchi, and quiet lakeside resorts.
High in the mountains of Nantou, Sun Moon Lake is Taiwan’s largest body of fresh water. Mist lifts off the surface at dawn, and forested hills fall straight to the shore.
It is the homeland of the Thao people, whose village of Ita Thao sits on the eastern shore, and the heart of Taiwan’s black tea country around Yuchi.

Cross between Shuishe, Xuanguang Temple and Ita Thao on a chartered boat rather than the crowded public ferries.
Insider tip Go early; the lake is at its most beautiful and quiet before 9:00.
The only Thao settlement in Taiwan, with crafts, food and the Thao Harvest Festival each September.
A seven-minute ride over the hills to the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, with wide views of the lake.
Insider tip Usually closed for maintenance on the first Wednesday of each month.
A gentle 3.5 km path from Shuishe Pier towards Wenwu Temple, one of the prettiest bike rides in Taiwan.
A pagoda on Shabalan Mountain with views over the whole lake, reached by a short forest climb.
Taiwan’s ruby black tea grows on the slopes nearby; tastings with growers are a highlight.
The lake is lovely in every season. Mornings are calm and misty; weekends and holidays bring crowds to the piers.
