A former gold-mining town of lantern-lit stairways and hillside teahouses above the Pacific, best visited early morning or after the day crowds leave.
Jiufen grew rich on gold in the late 19th century, then emptied when the mines closed. Today its stepped lanes, red lanterns and teahouses cling to the hillside above the Pacific, often wrapped in sea mist.
Next door, Jinguashi keeps the mining story alive at the Gold Museum, while the Pingxi valley and Shifen add sky lanterns and waterfalls. Together they make Taipei’s most rewarding day trip, if you avoid the midday crowds.

The famous stepped lane of red lanterns and teahouses, crossing the narrow market street of snacks and taro balls.
Insider tip Come before 10:00 or after 19:00 to see it without shoulder-to-shoulder crowds.
Several historic teahouses look over the bay. A slow oolong tasting is the best way to feel the town.
The old mining settlement next to Jiufen, with Japanese-era dormitories, a mine tunnel and a famous 220 kg gold bar.
Mineral-stained water and a two-coloured bay below the mining hills, both on the scenic coast road.
Write wishes on a paper lantern beside the railway, then walk to the wide curtain of Shifen Waterfall.
The northeast coast is often misty and rainy, especially in winter, which suits Jiufen’s atmosphere. Weekends and late afternoons are crowded; weekday mornings and after dark are calmest.
