A private day on Taiwan’s northeast coast: Shifen’s sky lanterns and waterfall in the morning, a reserved teahouse table in Jiufen, and the Golden Waterfall at dusk. We time each stop to avoid the coach-tour peaks, so the lantern-lit lanes feel like yours.
In the hills above the northeast coast, a former gold-mining town clings to the slope in a tangle of stairways, red lanterns and teahouses. Jiufen is beautiful and, at the wrong hour, very crowded. The difference between the two is timing.
Your day starts in the Pingxi valley, where the old railway still runs through Shifen and travellers write wishes on paper sky lanterns. A short walk away, Shifen Waterfall spreads wide over a curved rock ledge. By the time the coaches reach Jiufen, you are already seated at a teahouse table looking down to the Pacific.
As the light fades, the lanterns along Shuqi Road come on. Your guide takes you through the quieter lanes first, then to the viewpoints, before your chauffeur drives you back to Taipei.
