A marble canyon carved by the Liwu River. Several famous trails remain closed after the 2024 earthquake, so check our live trail status before planning.
Taroko National Park protects one of Asia’s most dramatic landscapes: a canyon cut through solid marble by the Liwu River, rising from the Pacific to peaks over 3,000 metres.
The April 2024 Hualien earthquake closed much of the gorge. It has reopened in stages, and conditions still change after heavy rain. We publish what is open on our Live Taiwan page and plan every visit around it.

Cliffs rising over 1,000 metres almost straight out of a turquoise Pacific, along the Suhua Highway north of the gorge.
Insider tip Seen best in the morning light; canoe and paddle-board trips run below the cliffs in calm weather.
A short forest stair-trail above the visitor centre, with canyon views and a good introduction to the park’s geology.
The gorge’s upper hub: a temple, pagoda and suspension bridge over the river.
Insider tip Access depends on Highway 8 timed releases; your guide checks them that morning.
The Truku people have lived in these mountains for centuries; weaving, food and stories bring the landscape to life.
Spring and autumn are dry and mild. July to September is typhoon season, when storms can close Highway 8; summer afternoons often bring rain.

Partly. See our Live Taiwan trail status for the latest open and closed sections.
A day trip from Taipei works; a night in Hualien makes it calmer and lets you add the east coast.
