High-speed rail from Taipei to Taichung, then a private car to Sun Moon Lake for a chartered boat, a black tea estate in Yuchi and the Ci’en Pagoda. A calm, unhurried day of water, forest and tea, back in Taipei by evening.
Sun Moon Lake sits in the mountains at the centre of the island, its two lobes said to resemble a sun and a crescent moon. Mornings often bring a soft mist off the water; by midday the hills turn a deep green.
Rather than the crowded public ferries, you cross the lake on a chartered boat to the Thao village of Ita Thao and the Xuanguang Temple. After lunch by the water, your chauffeur drives to Yuchi, where Taiwan’s ruby black tea grows on the slopes and the grower walks you through a tasting.
The day closes with a short forest climb to the Ci’en Pagoda, whose terrace looks across the whole lake, and the high-speed train back to Taipei.
