Sun Moon Lake boats link three piers: Shuishe, Xuanguang and Ita Thao. Public boats run about every 15–20 minutes from 09:00 to 17:00, and a ticket covers the loop for the day. The piers open 07:00–18:00 in summer and 08:00–17:00 in winter. For a quiet lake, go early or charter a private boat.
How the boats work
The Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area lists three main piers. Shuishe is the main village on the north shore; Xuanguang serves Xuanguang Temple; Ita Thao is the Thao village on the east shore, near the ropeway.
Public boats loop between them about every 15–20 minutes from 09:00 to 17:00, and a ticket is valid for the day, so you can hop off and on. Pier hours are 07:00–18:00 in summer and 08:00–17:00 in winter.
Public boat or private boat?
The public boats are efficient but full at weekends and holidays. A chartered boat leaves when you want, including before the public service starts, when mist still lies on the water.
The ropeway and the bikeway
- Sun Moon Lake Ropeway: a 7-minute ride from Ita Thao over the hills, with wide lake views. It usually closes for maintenance on the first Wednesday of each month.
- Shuishe lakeside bikeway: a gentle path from Shuishe Pier, one of the prettiest short rides in Taiwan.
Getting there from Taipei
- High-speed rail to Taichung (about 1 hour), then about 1–1.5 hours by private car.
- Or from Taichung HSR station, the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle (台灣好行) runs to the lake.
- Direct buses run from Taipei; the trip takes about 4 hours.
