The short answer

The fastest way from Taipei to Hualien is Taiwan Railway’s express train, about 2–2.5 hours along the Pacific coast. Taroko and Puyuma express trains are reserved-seat services that sell out at weekends and holidays, so book early. Driving the Suhua Highway takes longer and can close after heavy rain.

By train

Express trains run from Taipei Main Station down the northeast coast to Hualien in about 2–2.5 hours, depending on the service and stops. Some stop at Xincheng, the closest station to the Taroko Gorge entrance.

Taroko, Puyuma and EMU3000 express trains are reserved-seat services. At weekends and holidays they sell out, so book as soon as reservations open, or let us handle it.

By car

The Suhua Highway connects Yilan with Hualien along the cliffs. It is slower and more tiring than the train, and sections can close after heavy rain or rockfalls. We use it when guests want to stop at viewpoints along the coast, with a professional driver.

From Hualien into Taroko Gorge

From Hualien or Xincheng, the gorge entrance is a short drive. Inside the park, Highway 8 opens in timed daytime release windows during repair works (five a day in recent notices) and is closed at night. Shakadang Trail and Swallow Grotto remain closed.

Day trip or overnight?

  • Day trip: early train out, evening train back; a 12–13 hour day.
  • Overnight: stay in Hualien by the sea, or at Silks Place Taroko in the gorge (reopened 16 January 2025), and see the cliffs in morning light.
  • Onward: continue south through the East Rift Valley to Taitung on a round-island trip.
